“We have strengthened the standards criteria of the certification. The enhanced standards focus on sustainable practices, taking into account the changes in global sustainability needs. The Malaysian Reserve
Malaysia's new sustainable palm oil standards: What plantation players should know
KUALA LUMPUR: Oil palm plantations and palm oil processing facilities need to comply with the standards of the new Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) 2022 launched last month.
The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) director-general Datuk Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir said from Jan 1 2024, MSPO certificate holders would be re- audited based on the enhanced standards of the MSPO 2022.

He said in meeting the global demand for sustainability, three elements on economic cycle, forced labour and placement of plantation workers were added in the MSPO 2022, replacing the MSPO issued in 2013.
"MSPO 2022 also sees the palm oil industry adopting the high conservation value (HCV) concept with national interpretation in MSPO HCV guidelines.
"Other critical requirements involve policies that commit to no deforestation, no peat development, and no exploitation," it said. New Straits Times

Update April 05, 2022. OVERVIEW OF THE REVISED MSPO STANDARDS (MS2530:2022)
Compared to its predecessor, the MS 2530:2022 was developed with very different industry baseline knowledge on sustainable oil palm management practices. In 2013, sustainable certification of oil palm was only implemented by large industry players. But due to the groundwork established by the MS 2530:2013, the revised Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) standards launched in 2022 with more awareness about sustainable practices, and a capacity to implement them, which was not previously present.
The MS 2530:2022 still consists of the four main parts and is further divided into a total of eight (8) separate parts. This was to cater to the differences in capacity and scale of the implementers of the MSPO. MPOCC

Update December 27, 2021. The Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil certification makes its case for mandatory certification in 2022.
Consumer demand for sustainable goods is increasing. 2022 is the year to prove that mandatory certifications like the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) scheme is an effective model.
The European Union and the United Kingdom have both proposed legislative measures to reduce deforestation in their imports.
At the centre of their proposals is the ‘due diligence’ of importers to ensure their business does not support deforestation.
‘Due diligence’ suggests the involvement of third-party certification schemes but critics have warned that third-party certification schemes, in particular voluntary certification schemes, are inadequate to prevent imported deforestation.

The world's second largest producer of palm oil, Malaysia, is working towards certifying all Malaysian palm oil operations as sustainable under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) scheme. The key difference between the MSPO and the RSPO is that the MSPO is legally mandated whereas the RSPO is voluntary.
With an estimated 5.8 million hectares of palm oil plantations distributed between Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak, the MSPO target for complete certification is 2020. The Malaysian government has allocated funds to assist small and medium sized growers to attain certification but it remains a herculean task.
CSPO Watch will be monitoring the progress of Malaysia's effort towards certifying its palm oil. Key developments towards its goal of 100% CSPO by 2020 shown below by date.
